Share your Children’s Art to Promote Youth Literacy with the American Youth Literacy Foundation

For the past several years American Youth Literacy Foundation has been working to convert their amazing reading curriculum, that teaches children how to read in just 12 hours, into an app that teaches children how to read in about the same time. Right now, they are looking for some very special 5-9 year old kids who like to draw pictures of superheroes. Some of these drawings will be included in the app. Some of them will get special placement in our "Scrolling Credits" section and will be used on the FUNetix.org website. If you wish to be considered for this opportunity, please send high quality photos of hand drawn or hand painted superheroes specifically*: Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Hulk, Groot, Ant Man / Ant Woman, Ironman, Thor, Black Panther, Black Widow, Bat Girl, Batman, Superman *(These are our internal team names, so to be considered, please only send drawings of these superheroes.) We are looking for hand drawn artwork only, by 5-9 year old kids only, specifically focused on the superhero and logo. Some background is ok but the more prominently displayed the superhero is, the more likely the artwork will qualify to be included in the app and or website. Please include name and age of artist (initials ok). By sending photos, you agree to allow us to use them for any and all purposes related to the FUNetix 12 Hour Reading App. No compensation other than name recognition shall be given. Hand drawn artwork only. Please take a high quality photo. Thank you moms, dads and kids for volunteering to possibly add your artwork to the FUNetix Reading App and the FUNetix.org website. Send your photos to superhero@YouthLit.org by October 6, 2020. We will still accept photos until Thanksgiving but they will not be in the first release of the app (Version 1.0).

Teach Computer Skills to Low Income Families

More kids are online schooling than ever, but not all guardians know how to help them with tech issues. Give Spanish-speaking guardians the tech-smarts they need to ensure their kids?۪ success. Aviva Famiy and Children's Services exists to uplift and serve LA families, especially during the hardships of the COVID-19 crisis. They specialize in services like crisis intervention, mental health, foster and adoption, and supportive housing for women and children. A big part of the achievement gap for Latinx students is lack of access to technology. If there are tech challenges, the child whose parent can help them navigate those is going to surpass the child whose parent cannot. You can help close the achievement gap for Latinx students by teaching Spanish-speaking guardians basic computer skills. In this virtual volunteer opportunity, you will assist Spanish-speaking parents with basic computer skills. A lesson will be instructed by the Project Leader, and then you?۪ll break out into small groups to mentor your partner(s) as they complete different activities. The whole group will then reassemble to discuss their experiences. ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Must be 21+ years old, Spanish-speaking ability required and Must be comfortable using internet, email, google suite, and social media.
